TWO WATTS, A BACKYARD, AND A SIGNAL TO ANTARCTICA
* Long-Distance QRP Communication (Minnesota to Antarctica)
Using only two watts of power (QRP) and an antenna setup in his Twin Cities
backyard in Minnesota, licensed ham radio operator Jonathan Stacke established
a two-way HF contact with the German weather station team in Antarctica in
under two minutes.
* Operator Profile & Institutional Link
Stacke, who served 22 years in the military, developed his passion for high-frequency
(HF) radio and satellite communications while in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
He currently works as a recruiter for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS),
an agency dedicated to emergency preparedness and response.
* Value of High-Frequency (HF) Radio in Emergencies
The feature underscores the resilience of shortwave radio during commercial
infrastructure failures. Unlike cellular networks and internet connections,
which can drop or be interrupted, HF radio remains operational under any
circumstance: "As long as you have a piece of wire, a transistor, and a battery,
you can reach people all over the world."

Radio amateurs and network operators are encouraged to maintain low-power QRP
transceivers and wire antenna kits ready for field deployment during grid
outages or telecom infrastructure failures.
