While   there   are   8  bits  per   character   in   synchronous 
transmissions,  the packet overheads like addresses, check  sums, 
and  synchronizing  characters in the prefix often add up  to  a 
couple  bits  per character. To say nothing about a long  TXD  to 
allow the other end receiver to go back to working.
