RSGB AGM next weekend

.

On Saturday 28 April the 80th RSGB AGM takes place at The National
Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.

Following the AGM a celebratory dinner will be held in the nearby
Paramount Carlton hotel. Details of the AGM and how to obtain tickets for
the dinner have been published in RadCom and are on the RSGB website.

The Lothians Radio Society will be providing talk-in from 10am to 11.45
on channel V44, 145.550MHz FM. They will also be operating AM talk-in
services on 144.550 MHz and 145.575MHz. Car parking restrictions are
enthusiastically enforced in the vicinity of the AGM and you are advised
to contact the talk-in stations for guidance.

Large turnout at Kempton Rally

.

Hundreds of radio hams queued patiently in the scorching sun waiting for
the doors to open for the Kempton Rally on Sunday 15 April.

The Kempton rally was host to the new RSGB Top Ham competition sponsored
by Kenwood UK, Martin Lynch and Sons and RadioFairs.

Over 750 question papers were issued, and the first 100 who retuned their
papers received a free commemorative mug.

The top six people with the highest scores entered a panel-style quiz
hosted by Eugene Sully, G0VIQ, from Big Brother. The quiz was televised
round the show and via ATV repeater GB3HV to an internet stream. After an
intense, closely fought battle, Chris, G4IFX, took the RSGB Top Ham
Trophy and first prize of a Kenwood TS 480SAT HF transceiver presented by
David Wilkins of Kenwood. The runner up, John, G4IRN, received a Kenwood
TM-27IE transceiver.

Workshop for newcomers to microwaves

On Saturday 9 June the Torbay Amateur Television and Microwave Group will
be hosting the fifth in a series of workshops being held throughout the
UK. The event is suitable for anyone interested in the microwave bands
and the workshop is specifically aimed at those who have no experience of
these frequencies.

The day will be structured around a series of introductory talks and
practical demonstrations of microwave stations and operation. There will
be a number of experienced microwave operators present during the day so
that all your questions can be answered. It is to be held at the Abbrook
Park Sports and Social Club, Kinsteignton, Newton Abbot, Devon from 10am
and it is free of charge. Ken Harper, G0EKH, is managing the event and
anyone wishing to attend this workshop should contact him via e-mail to
norstech@blueyonder.co.uk or by telephone on 01626 202 925.

ISS contact from the Isle of Man

A British radio amateur who made contact with Charles Simonyi, KE7KDP, on
the International Space Station has been featured on BBC television.

Matty Cunningham, MD0MAN, was filmed for a report by Abbey Jones on
Northwest Tonight.

The BBC report and video featured amateur radio in a very positive light
and can be viewed online.

IARU Region 1 EmCom Party on the Air

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 will be holding its second
EmCom Party on the Air on Sunday 5 May between 1100 and 1500 UTC on the
40, 20 and 15m bands using the designated emergency centres of activity.

Participants are drawn from its member societies' HQ stations and
emergency communications groups in the region. The aim of the event is to
raise the profile of amateur radio emergency communications, test how
usable these frequencies are across Region 1 and create practices for
international emergency communication between Region 1 member societies
and emergency groups such as RAYNET.

It is emphasised that this is not a contest but an emergency
communications exercise.

The aim for participants is to contact IARU Region 1 HQ station OF3F in
Finland and also as many other national HQ and emergency communication
group stations as possible using SSB.
More information on the UK involvement in this exercise can be obtained
from the RAYNET HF Team website at www.raynet-hf.net.

GB3LEX 10GHz beacon operational

.

GB3LEX, the 10GHz beacon located at the Leicestershire repeater group
site near Junction 22 of the M1 motorway, became operational on its
assigned frequency of 10368.955MHz during the afternoon of 15 April.

It beams south and has a beamwidth of 90 degrees. The erp is 0.5W.

European MF experiments

.

Since the beginning of 2005 the German telecommunication authorities have
licensed a propagation study experiment on medium wave MF.

The first license for an experimental station on 440 kHz plus/minus 100
Hz was issued to Walter, DJ2LF under the callsign DI2AG. In May 2006,
Geri, DK8KW got the second license to operate under the callsign DI2BO at
his home location in Peine near Hannover, locator JO52BH.

Early in 2007 the experimental radio licenses were extended to a second
frequency. Besides 440 kHz also 505.1 kHz plus/minus 100 Hz may now be
used. This frequency falls into the frequency range of the experimental
radio group with the callsign WD2XSH in the U.S. Also, the Swedish
authorities have issued one license for this frequency range. This
frequency is also very close to the new amateur radio band 501 to 504 kHz
which was issued recently on an experimental basis.

DI2BO currently transmits in QRSS3 interrupted by CW identification. For
the time being the beacon will remain permanently on 24/7 on 505.015 kHz.
Reception reports are welcome, either via DK8KW or direct.

Correct reception reports will be confirmed by a special QSL card.
