Are M3's now allowed to tweak radios?.

I would be an M0 if it wasnt for the RSGB & OFCOMedy changing the licensing rules......

I studied for the RAE many years ago, but never got around to taking it, owing to a large workload at the time.
This year I decide to take it, and learn that I have to take the M3 course first, then the Intermediate and so forth. All well and good, if you can find the damned courses.

So, for now, I am stuck as an M3, being regarded as a second class citizen, abused on air by A class licensees, getting keyed over whilst trying to QSO on HF with my 10 watts.. and yes, unlike a lot of M3 stations, I do use 10 watts only. Oh, by the way, I also use CW a lot on HF. Sometimes it's the only way to be heard with 10w on HF.

I have a good many years experience in electronics and the PMR industry, so I take exception that I should be regarded as some ex CB op who has decided to have a go on the ham bands. So what difference does it make, if I do tweak a radio? I have the knowledge and experience to do it, so why not? would you ask the same question if my mate, who is a G6 asked the question? No, I doubt it. By the way, it's his test equipment I will be using, in his shack, under his supervision. So whats wrong with that?

This is what amateur radio is all about. "Self training in radio communications including technical investigations". Not buy an expensive rig, use it, and if it goes wrong, send it to be repaired at a cost of probably a couple of hundred quid.

Amateur radio is in danger of becoming a "chequebook" hobby. How many amateurs today dare jump inside their radios and try to diagnose and fix a problem? not many I would suspect.

At least I have the balls to check my equipment, and try to put it right if there is a problem.

So, When I ask for constructive advice, I dont expect snide comments asking if M3's are allowed to tweak radios. I dont like being an M3 any more than you probably like M3's. But until I can get on the intermediate course, I'm afraid I'm stuck with the license.

And I tell you something, I cant wait to rip the foundation license up. Lets just hope 2E/M/I etc calls dont have to take the same kind of crap that I have had to take over the last few months. Not all M3 licensees are the same. I agree, there are some bad/Idiotic ones out there. But then again, there are roughly the same amount of full licensees out there too, and some of them have been licensed long enough to know better.

Just dont class me as an idiot, just because I have an M3 call, thats all I ask.
