Hello All, Hope your having a good day. I would like to give some
viewpoints
on the AGW/PE for soundcard and tnc packet.
The Sound Card:
As we have been talking about the AGW/PE uses ram without freeing it after
its
done with a process causeing a crash. I look at sound card operation as a
'poor mans packet' system. it works fine but I dont think it was ment to
run 24/7, I could be wrong. If it was not for the AGW/PE I would not have
gotten back on packet so I do think its a great thing. The price to get
started is next to nothing and makes us use our heads a bit to set it uin
hardware and software. I use sound card for getting on a BBS or connecting
to
a friend, useing it for a short time and then turning off the computer. I
did
have some 'out of memory' crashes when running for long times and found a
ram
defragment program HELPED but did NOT FIX the problem. Sound card is a
good
thing, I hope an updated version will have all this fixed or someone will
find out exactly what to do about the crashes. It seems to be a sound card
mode only issue and well above my knowledge of programming.

This would be a good starting point for fixing this crash thing. Look at
the
changes within the two versions and that might point to the problem. That
would be well over my knowledge of programming so I will leave that to
someone who knows what to look for. But, I think I will look for the older
version 2002.10 and run it.

Thanks Graham, Andy and RU3BB for all the time and testing.
A TNC:
This to me is the right way to run 24/7 packet or have a message box.
It is a stand alone unit, uses next to nothing in power compaired to a pc
and most dont have a crash problem (that I know of). It does cost more to
buy a TNC but you get what you pay for. And I hear that AGW/PE working
with
a TNC does NOT have a crash problem, but I have not tried that. If I was
to
run a BBS or any other 24/7 operation, I would have a real TNC online.
Many New Sound Card Modes:
I have used alot of the sound card software for SSTV, DSSTV, PACKET, RTTY,
PSK, ect. and I would not have tried ansoundcard
software because of high cost for other hardware. But if I where really
serious about it, then I would get external hardware for the job, however
most soundcard coder/decoders seem to work well.
All we can do is continue to examine and play with these modes and
programs.
Also, I use solar power for most of my station and power comsumptions must
be kept low on why I use a KPC-2 TNC for 24/7 mailbox
and not the computer.
My System:
P4, 1.6 Ghz, Soyo Mother Board
384 Mb PC-133 Ram
120 Gb Hard Drive
AC'97 Audio (on board)
KPC-2 TNC
Yeasu Memorizer 2 Meter Rig
