Well it may seem like I'm going on and on about this but I like a challenge.
With your 256 meg of ram this will mean AGW has more ram to run out of ;-)
More ram appears to just put off the time before it crashes.
Heres the results of some extensive tests done by myself and RU3BB who
seem to spend far too many hours playing packet ;-)
Version 2002.308 appears to use a piece of memory for it's decoding/encoding
purposes and once that task is done it then allocates itself another page of
ram BUT doesn't release the last piece of ram. Accordingly you eventually
use up all the ram and it crashes because the other ram hasn't been released.
At this point the PC will lock up, the PTT line goes high and your poor tx
is on all the time. A ZL user had the same problem and destroyed his PA.
He too had huge amounts of ram, but eventually it will crash.
Myself and RU3BB have coordinated our tests, same ram, same boot up time
and we can crash them at the same time.
Now then, we've done some tests using the old version 2002.10 and found
it won't crash. We've both done our best to run out of resources, loaded
huge programs to run out of ram and all that results is that the last
application that is run just refuses to load, but crucially Winpack and
AGW carry on working, no lock up's, no pttlines being held high and
no reboots.
My only niggle with the old version is that it seems much more critical
of audio input. Like you suggested I connect to the local node and do
a nodes list or BPQ stats and get the levels right.
I've even made sure that when changing radios I check the amplitude of
both tone freqs on tx and rx just in case the radio's have different
de/pre-emphasis.

As above but with a meagre 32 meg of ram and so far no crashes.
