I caught a programme on TV a couple of months ago. It was about
meteorology.

Just as I was about to change channel, the presenter showed the aeroplane
he was about to ride in to view the various layers.

I was shocked!

It was an English Electric P1 Lightning. Something I had not seen for
decades. The man explained that he was going to the edge of space courtesy
of the South African Air Force which had a lot of these Lightnings.

I was glued for the next few minutes as the pilot went into a near
vertical climb courtesy of thos two huge RollS Royyce engines, one above
the other.

He then asked the presenter if he wanted to go supersonic and proceeded to
do it.

I know that there are aircraft still flying all over the world which are
up to 60 years old but not in the military. I presume that the SAAF has
fitted
modern electronics in the P1 but it is still nice to see a 50 year old
British a/c still in use.

It was not just a repeat of an old film which so many modern TV progs tend
to be. I was checking the surrounding, haircut etc., to see if it was
something from the 70s- no.
