I saw that film, 'Firefox' for the fifth time the other day and wondered
how far the Russians had got. I knew about the MiG 29 and how keen the
Americans were to get their hands on it after the collapse of the USSR but
I wondered if there was anything later,

The a/c in the film was the 'MiG 31 'Foxhound', no thought control but
Look Down/Shoot Down. i.e., Look at it and press the button.

The MiG 31 BM air to air and air to ground is pretty impressive. Designed
and built by 1999, unlike the Eurofighter 2000, renamed 'Typhoon' after
being late.

The MiG 31 BM sounds very impressive. Travels over 14 miles in 9 minutes -
straight up! With it's excellent onboard computer system, air to air it
can take on 24 opponents at once.

The Chinese are building it at the moment, expect 200+ by 2010.

The only data not given was whether or not it can vif and the price.
The CIS will sell it to anyone. A frightening prospect.

This pic was from the 1992 Paris airshow. A .GIF converted to .JPG, not
amazing quality but someone might like it.
