Info file.
NB for those who like perfect pictures, even of plants and fields; this
won't come into that category.
Like my pictures of the Marconi monument at Poldhu, this picture was also
taken with a pocket instamatic, many years ago.
Not because it was all that I had with me, as with Marco but because, even
though I had access to a Hasselblad and a Chinon 35mm SLR, they were too
big to use in a sailplane.
I have used software to improve it but not a lot and, yes. It really was
that dark.
The poor little Kodak was working it's guts out to get a picture on 8mm
100 ASA film.
The point of it is; it brings back happy memories to me and may appeal to
any other glider pilots. The lights in the caravans and the clubhouse
below the control tower of the Yorkshire Gliding Centre, show how dark it
actually was. At the time I took it, I hadn't time to wind on and take
another, I was turning on to the downwind leg and very busy with
flaps, brakes, speed etc (UFSTALL was the mnemonic in the UK).
I was quite surprised when it came out.
I was prompted to send it by another, almost identical pic someone sent
out
which is little more than an icon. I cant increase it to viewable size, it
has so few pixels.
I was lucky not to have ever been in a club. The man who taught me had
been a famous photographer and owned a large studio Bombay.
His subjects included Mahatma Ghandi,Pandit Nehru, Yehudi Menuhin and a
few other famous people as well as manuments in out of the way places.
All taken with his trust Rolleiflex, often with film he had coated
himself.
He said "Always try to take a picture someone will want to see, never mind
if it isn't absolutely technically perfect".
The local club was giving prizes to a picture of a coiled rope on a jetty.
Technically perfect but not something you would want to keep.
Yes. I could go back now with a modern camera weighing just ounces and
take an excellent picture. Unless I win the lottery, my gliding days are
over, so it isn't likely.
Just a couple of parts to AERO@WW so you can kill them if you want.
All the best from - Ian, G0TEZ @ GB7FCR
