Ian wrote about the sale of BAS's sale of Aerobus shares.
It might well be a clever move. With many real experts warning that Peak Oil
has either happened or will happen in the next few years the aviation
industry will be the first to go down the gurgler. BAS stated they wanted to
concentrate on military aircraft. You can bet that the military will get all
the fuel they need.
There is no argument that Peak Oil will happen, the only argument is when.
The polititians and the oil company executives say not for many years but the
academics and the retired oil field engineers and geologists say about now or
by 2010. Also a major oil industry merchant banker has studied the Saudi
oil fields and does not believe they can increase production significantly.
So it is a betting game on who is right.
Let you in on a secret, I have some Qantas shares, one of the few airlines
making a decent profit. However I will probably sell them on the next
significant jump in oil prices.
The experts say watch for significant volatility in oil price as a
warning of short supply.
Good place to start reading up on Peak Oil is www.peakoil.net
It is based at Upsala University I believe. Or at least the ASPO organisation
is based there.
