Hi Pieter,
You are almostcertainly correct; it appears to bo modified for
pylon racing, Reno Air Races style. Many of the WW2 & post-WW2 piston
aircraft were used for this, and many were nodified to reduce frontal
artea with a view to increasing airspeed just that little bit more,
Several aircraft, i.e., Grumman Bearcat, N.A Mustang, p 51, and Hawler
Sea Furies, amomng others were so dealt to.
This is as much as I can provide; no doubt several followers mof such
sport can enlighten further.
