Hi Bob and readers,
Oh never mind Szigy and his Portnoy's Complaint, maybe he has some
frustration to vent like we all do from time to time. Seems to me he has
because it has nothing to do with 6M per se, rather a general complaint
about the frustrating changes that have happened to Amateur Radio, not
all have been good. One must adapt or go the way of the dinosaurs, one
way I have is taking advantage of contests to check out how well my
station is performing since they sure bring hams out of the woodwork.
When there's one going on VHF I love to hand out points to some of my
favorites, mostly clubs I know and many are way out there at the fringe
of my coverage area, just a bit of a challenge you know.
OK, so you can't hear the beacons but niether can I since I'm now too far
from the only one I used to hear regularly in Philadelphia. Well, when I
DO hear one I know something's happening and after all, that's what
they're for in the first place. More often than not the first indication
is chatter on 50.125 where I leave the receiver sitting whenever I'm in
the shack. On 10M it's 28.400 which seems to be an unofficial calling
frequency and a popular spot for local groups.
No big deal, there's ALWAYS something happening somewhere, that's why we
have more than 40 channels on 11M to play with.
