I think it's fair to say that 50Mhz is a bit different from other bands.
It seems as if it is forbidden to make QSO's with locals and it *is* an
underused band.
The arguments put forward by KH2D about 15 mins of propagation a year are
obviously cobblers - as like with 28Mhz it suffers from the "quick spin
of the dial" syndrome and if nothing is heard everyone goes back to
echopuke or the 2m CB repeaters instead.
But of course liike 28Mhz there's often a darn sight more propagation
available to make qso if only everyone bothered to spend more than 5
minutes
on the band each day.
You know the scenario - 27Mhz doesn't have a single kilocycle free, and yet
time after time it appears that the F layer has mysteriously stopped doing
anything at exactly 28.000Mhz ;-)
The frustrating thing about 50Mhz is not the propagation (as KH2D says)
but the attitude of the people using it which makes for a tangible lack of
activity or QSO rate.
The real magic of the band is that the attenuation per hop is so trivial.
It's true, I've used 2 watts and a bit of wire in the spare bedroom
pinned to the wall like some HI-FI FM tuner antenna and worked all over
europe just the same as everyone else when we get our european SpE
season.
Can't argue with that.
I can hear the 5 watt beacon GB7BAA most of the time about 50 miles
always on same antenna.
50MHz problems...not the propagation...just the attitude of typical
operators which makes 50Mhz a lousy band.
Too snotty to work locals, too lazy to spend more than 5 mins on the band -
it's a vicious circle.
Oh and of course no one has asked me yet how I acquired the original
article - wait for it....
Why of course the UK Six Metre Group - http://www.uksmg.org/sic_metres.htm
