General information.
Libya, 5A. The Daily DX reports that Abubaker Alzway, 5A1A will be soon
leaving Libya; he will go and study in Germany. In the meanwhile a few
new amateur radio licences have been issued to the Assaker Club station
(5A1ASC, QSL via DK4HB), Tark Abu Kris (5A1TA, QSL via EA3GIP) and
Haytm Hashim (5A1HA, QSL via DJ9ZB). (QSP de 425 DX News #550)
Barbados, 8P. John, K4BAI will be active as 8P9HT from Barbados on 20-
27 November. He hopes to use the 8P9Z callsign during the CQ WW DX CW
Contest (SOAB high power). Outside the contest he will concentrate on
160 metres and the WARC bands CW (SSB on request), plus 6 metres CW and
SSB when the band is open. QSLs via K4BAI. [TNX The Daily DX] (QSP de
425 DX News #550)
Niue Isl., ZK2. Tommy, VK2IR is planning a trip for Nov 22-29. His call
is not sure yet but he intends to be QRV on 6-40m. Next stop shall be
Tonga. (QSP de DXNL 1269)
Grenland, OX. Acording to Jorgen OZ0J, during the resent XP1AB opera-
tion a total of 106 QSOs were made at six meters. Contact with follow-
ing countries were made, DL, LZ, 9A, I, YO, UT, OE, S5, 9H, SV and EH.

worked 12-12-91 0917z Steve VK3SIX QF02 9 element Yagi and FT650.
Galapagos Islands, HC8N. Jon N0JK writes; Due to early arrivals the
HC8N station EI59 will be QRV on 6 Meters from 2300Z on Nov 17 to 1600Z
on Nov 28. Trey, N5KO will have a cell phone at the shack, thus we can
receive calls to alert us of propagation or comments regarding opera-
ting. The Cell number is +593 9 956-5940 This is Trey's personal cell
phone rather than the shack cell phone, so when he leaves, the phone
leaves. Cell phone service can be intermittent. HC8N runs 100 watts and
a 6M7JHV yagi on 6M. I will be at HC8N Nov. 20 - 26. We will make an
effort to work Europe and Asia. The 6M station will be QRV even while
the CQ WW Contest is in progress. HC8N will also be QRV on 2M for TEP
and on the Fuji and AO-10 SATs. Please look for HC8N on 160 - 10M in
the CQ WW contest. Pictures of HC8N 6M yagi, operating position and SAT
antenna at: http://communities.msn.com/6mdx More HC8N pictures at:

Ogasawara, JD. Three stations were active this past week, one probably
a pirate (JD1XX). The station signing JD1BIA was active this past week-
end on 6 and 15 meters. Watch 21275 kHz (or lower) after 0530z or later
for stateside starting around 2300z. (QSP de OPDX #536)
Ghana, 9G. Dick K5AND/9G5AN, writes; Arliss, W7XU, Dick, K5AND and Ed,
W0SD, arrived Accra, Ghana, on Thursday, Oct. 25; yes, it IS a long
trip&ldots;..about 14 hours in the air not counting the lay-overs. Pic-
ked up licenses the next morning and headed to Elmina, about 100 miles
southwest of Accra and midway to the Ivory Coast. Got to the Oyster Bay
Hotel mid afternoon Friday and began to erect antennas; temperature
about 90F with humidity to match. Our six meter antenna was a 7 element
K5AND design on a 27' boom with a hairpin match and 50 ohm current balun
It was supported by a 25' rotating mast turned by a Yaesu G-250 rotator
and was about 50' up over the water. The 28885 antenna was an inverted
Vee dipole, also at 50'. The equipment for six was a Yaesu FT-100D ra-
dio, 3CX800 amp by K5AND, Heil headsets, Paddlette key, Idiom memory
keyer. Both the antenna/mast package and the amp weigh less than 30lbs
each and are thus able to travel as carry-on baggage&ldots;.. really
important. Contact summary: Arliss and I concentrated on six, generally
with one operating and the other computer logging with WriteLog. This
resulted in a little over 3000 contacts in 84 countries in 8 days of
operating; 2300 EU, 200 NA, 300 Asia, 200 S. America, 30 Africa and 5
Oceana. We generally operated every day/night from 5:30 am until 2-3 am
We took off part of one morning to investigate the Castle in Elmina and
a near-by rainforest; this also helped relieve terrible fanny-fatigue,
and, was prescribed by our doctor. Ed operated during the contest week-
end and logged over 4000 contacts on RTTY and SSB during the contest
weekend and during the remainder of the next week. He used an ICOM 746
with an Acom 1000 amp connected to a G5RV antenna. Other notes: The
people of Ghana are very friendly and the people at the hotel were
anxious to help. Ralph Quist, 9G1RQ and George Hakim, 9G1RL were SO
helpful with all the licensing issues; we also got help from Mike,
KC7V, Roger, G3SXW and Fred, G4BWP on logistics, hotel choice, trans-
portation and the like. Getting through Ghana customs was hassle-free,
and no one got sick, got hurt or lost weight. Operating high-lights:
Long and short path contacts to JA, V73 and VR2 were very exciting, and
may be some kind of record. Working 8Q7 on side-scatter to ZS was fun,
as was working ZK1 direct path. Incredibly strong signals from EU and
TV blanking pulses so strong as to QRM some of our contacts. Best day's
work was 550 Q's, with the 8-day average at about 333/day. Sustained Q
rate reached 117 per hour on a number of occasions. Conclusions: Things
that contributed to success include having excellent equipment AND high
power, having two people on the radio to log and operate and using com-
puter logging. I honestly can't imagine sustaining the Q rates we had
and trying to log manually. Surprises. One big surprise was the number
of folks that just did not understand why we did NOT need nor want
grid squares in the exchange. You can't believe how much time this
wastes on a dxpedition. Repeated requests to please not give locators
were completely unsuccessful. Next trip we need to do a better job
publicizing this. Another surprise was line voltage that exceeded 300
volts several times. The average was probably 250-260, which of course
made the amp very easy to drive&ldots;&ldots;. Wish list: We wish we
could have worked a lot more US stations, and of course we would have
loved to have worked VK and ZL. So now what about late March/early
April and late June/early July??
