Bolivia, CP. Bruce K2RTH, QSP's following from Mike, ZP5YW. Hi Bruce,
Heard you very loud as usual while attempting qso with CP1FQ. i thought
you made it as I didnt stay on frequency. He has a very strong signal
here, but he thinks his antenna is not working well. He built a "Hen-
tenna" according to specifications given by a JA who visited him last
year, but the antenna is on the southern part of his tower, and he does
not copy anything from the north, so he is building a 5 element yagi,
which I understand is a copy of the A50-5S. He expects to have it ready
this next week, as I told him many ham need CP and he is the only one
working 6m. He will improve his antenna and perhaps add some power to
his YAESU FT620. He said he'll be listening and calling above 50.110
daily, since 0000z, so I hope you and the other fellows will be able
to make in the coming weeks. Good luck ... 73 de Mike, ZP5YW
Australia, VK. Historical flashback. Steve VK3OT, writes; Death of an
Amateur. VK3FA Jack Falkenberg died alone on a property 20KM south of
Hamilton some time between 1999 and 2000. A visit to the site discove-
red old MOPAR 56 Mhz equipment Qsl cards from all states of VK made on
56 Mhz CVW as well as an ellusive ZL2, W5 and ZS6 qsos. so the mystery
of who made the first 6M qso and when is finially solved. Who was this
guy and why did he have to die alone ? Was he the 1950's version of
the excessive compulsive characters who pervade the 6M dx band today.
Every state has one and I can think of at least a half a dozen isola-
tes who live alone who do nothing but eat sleep breath the 6M band in
search of that ellusive DX. Tiffs and scuffles are the order of the
day and like them VK3FA was an isolate he refused to have anyone on
his farm as long ago as any here can remember his callsign. I found
qsl cards dating backto the start of 56 Mhz 1959 IGY in this region
written in copper plate ink and pen. In each state there are isolates
like Jack, will they die at the controls of their 6M radio and be
found a few years later ? Incredible you say, well this guy was not
found for at least 2 years. How could an organisation like the Western
Zone of the WIA lose track of one of their sons ? And a famous one
(in 1959) I mean he made the first 6m qso with South Africa. What was
his name - Vale, VK3FA this was his story. It is not going to be mine.
Malpelo Isl., HK0. Jon Jones writes; Looks like Pedro will be going to
Malpelo with a IC-706 xcvr and has indicated he will operate some on
6M. This will be the first time ever Malpelo is on 6M, and perhaps a
once in a 6M DXers lifetime chance to work Malpelo on the magic band.
Pedro's operating site on Malpelo is on the south side of the Island
with a large mountain between him and North America. He has a clear
shot to Europe, Africa, South America, Japan and Oceania. He may be
workable from North America via backscatter, I worked him on 10M back-
scatter when he went to Malpelo in 1999. His 6M propagation should be
similar to the Galapagos, thus hearing the HC8GR beacon may indicate
condx to Malpelo. 6M DXers who wish to encourage Pedro to spend some
time on 6M should consider sending a donation for his DXpedition to
N4AA. de N0JK Jon.
Turks & Caicos Isl., VP5. Dave/W5AO, along with husband/wife team
Connie/K5CM and Pam/N5KW, will operate from the VP5B station on North
Cacios Island from March 21st through April 5th. Each operator will
sign out the contest VP5/homecall. They will operate 160-6 meters SSB/
CW and will be active during the CQ WPX SSB Contest as VP5V. QSL cards
for VP5/K5CM and VP5/N5KW go to their home address and for VP5/W5AO
and VP5V, QSL to Box 88, Morris, OK 74445-088. (QSP de OPDX #502)
Pitcairn, VP6. Dianna KB6NAN, QSP a mail from Nob JF2MBF whits says;
Check out http://www.iijnet.or.jp/JA1BK/index2.html He is now on Pit-
cairn as VP6BK with Jacky VP6CW (ex F2CW). He said he has 6m gear with
him. 73 de Nob, JF2MBF
Jamaica, 6Y. Assuming everything goes to plan I will be qrv between
10th and 29th April as 6Y5/GM0EFT from FK08. If the band actually
opens, I will operate around 50.135 and if things get hectic will work
split (10 up), but will also listen on 50.235 for French stations. I
will try my best to be at the radio at the best time of day for Eu pro-
pagation but family duties will come first. Qsl either direct (self
addressed envelope plus sufficient return postage) or via the bureau.
If by some miracle there is propagation to Eu, please no duping during
pileups. Pileup dupers will receive no qsl card - be warned!! 73s.
Roy, GM0EFT gm0eft@btinternet.com (QSP de UKSMG ann.)
Australia, VK. I'm sorry to advise that the beacon VK6RSX on 50.304 MHz
at Exmouth Western Australia is QRT indefinitely. A new site is being
sought. EMC problems at the old site have forced the closure. With 50W
omni, the beacon had been well reported. Hopefully a new location will
eventually be found atthis latitude Don VK6HK patndon@cygnus.uwa.edu.au
(QSP de UKSMG ann.)
Cambodia, XU. Frank, DL4KQ (XU7ABR) reports that the planned activity
from Cambodia (15 July-3 August) will take place from Siem Reap (Angkor
Wat) for the first four days, with limited high band operations. The
group of four operators will then move to Sihanoukville where they
should be active on all bands 160-6 metres SSB, CW, RTTY and PSK31. QSL
via DL4KQ either direct Frank Rosenkranz, Blumenstr. 25, 50126 Bergheim
Germany or through the DARC bureau. Updates will be posted on
