Brunei, V85. I wish to announce that the proposed visit to Brunei and
a possible 50MHz operation starting April 12th 2001 has been cancelled.
The reason being that there are no "discounted" seats available between
Sydney and Brisbane on the departure day connecting with the Royal
Brunei Airlines flight from Brisbane to Brunei. The Easter holiday
period is a bad time to travel on the Australian domestic network, as
you can see, discounted seats are already "sold-out". Sorry people,
but that's life, my budget doesn't extend to the purchase of full price
economy seats I'm afraid. 73 de Jack vk2gjh@usa.net (QSP de UKSMG ann.)

Guinea, 3C. Goodbye 3C5!! It sounds like my stay here is rapidly coming
to a close as I am accepting a transfer back to Houston in April. Six
metre operation from here is something I will never forget - it has
been an eye-opener to see how often the band is open to the north
during the day. 3C is not a magic spot for six metres, with less than
3000 qsos in the 3 years of operation here. But it is rare. And it is
rare on 6m for a good reason... with local TV on 48.250 (video), there
is no way there should be any operation during TV hours. Also, the
quantity of hash from the TV makes reception almost impossible without
a noise canceller unit ANC-4. I will be operational for the next 3
weeks or so, and will be qrv as much as possible. I'm not sure of the
exact date i will shutdown but will post it as soon as I know. 73's

Jamaica, 6Y. (Update/High Schooling For DXing). The DXpedition Univer-
sity (DXU), the first of its kind to provide a training ground for
energetic radio amateurs wanting to learn the foundational methods and
tactics of DXpeditioning, is getting ready to hit the DXpedition trail.
The group will be active from February 26th to March 6th signing 6Y8A
or homecall/6Y5. Activity will be on all bands from 160-6 meters, most-
ly on SSB and CW though some PSK31 is possible. In addition to normal
operations, the group will enter the ARRL DX SSB Contest with a Multi-2
   entry. Operators will be Klein/WT6G, Mike/WA6O, David/K0COP, Tim/W6NS,
Walter/N6XG, and Kenny/K2KW. QSL 6Y8A via WA4WTG, others via homecall.
The group will have 4 stations with KW amplifiers on 160-6m, and use
Force 12 vertical arrays for 160-6m. The DXU ops are learning the
skills to run them with the best, so give them a call to help them
improve their pileup skills! Questions go to Kenny, K2KW at:

San Ambrosio Isl., CE0X. (Bad News!). Early last week the team going
here announced that they received some good news. The SUBTEL authorized
the DXpedition to use the callsign CE0XT (their first choice) instead
of CE0ZT. HOWEVER, on Saturday, pilot station Dr. Bill, K6GNX, reported
"The team regrets to report that due to circumstances beyond their con-
trol regarding the boat transportation from Valparaiso to San Ambrosia
the DXpedition must be canceled. Everyone is safe and well but very
disappointed and they are returning home as soon as possible."

Malpelo Isl., HK0. Last week (in OPDX.496) we mentioned that Pedro,
HK3JJH, sent a message to your editor in Spanish which I tried my best
to translate. This week I would like to thank both Rick Kissell,
WB9GYT, and Mike Mattes, W2LO, who took the time to translate the
message for me. Basically, I had the details right. Pedro is planning
his next expedition to Malpelo, for which he already has the license.
However, he did ask OPDX who he could contact about getting financial
aid. Pedro states, "For example, the cheapest postage from here
(Colombia) costs more than one American dollar." He receives only 80
American cents for an IRC, etc. He will be on the island for a month
and won't be able to return sooner due to the lack of transportation.
As mentioned last week, he will activate 6-10-12-15-17-20-40-80m SSB,
I will try RTTY. Pedro states, "Of course contributors will be duly
credited on the QSL card, it's also possible that I'll obtain a U.S.
mailing address, to avoid a repeat of past problems with the mails.
(I especially need a 6m rig with antenna, a lap-top, modem for RTTY.)"
If you are interested in helping, let OPDX know and I will forward the
message to Pedro. (QSP de OPDX #497)
