Hylton,

You can actually get into the top level of that site, without
the error message, if you trim down the URL to

 http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper

However, I looked around and still couldn't find the software
advertised. There is a lot of free software if you follow their
link to "Free Software and Resource Center":

http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/skylon/683

Maybe you can find what you are looking for there. Or, something
else might look interesting.

There is still a lot of things wrong with the site. I tried doing
a search but only received a message about the server having
problems. Then I tried to look up a user name, with their "people
finder" but only received a CGI script error dump. It looks like
a nice site but it seems to have lots of problems.

Subject: equipment review in QST

Yet another equipment review from ARRL labs in QST which gave no attention
to the bad BER test for 9k6 capability. I did send this message to
the ARRL editors :

Dear sirs,

I would like to say that, in my opinion and jugding from the review article
in QST September 1999 page 73 - 76, the Yaesu FT-90R is NOT 9600bd capable.
I really hope that you will pay a little bit more attention to the
measurements, comparing them to the standards set by Jon, KE3Z in the
QST article : "9600 ready radio's - ready or not ?" of QST May 1995
page 24 - 29.

1 - The receive-transmit turnaround time of 160/130 ms is much too high.
A value of 50ms or lower should be maintained for effective use of a 9600bd
packet channel. With 160ms, the transceiver will likely produce lots of
collisions on a 9k6 channel.

2 - The Bit Error Rate (BER) of the transmitter on 144 and 440 MHz of
9.1E-5 resp 7.5E-4 is not enough to properly handle a 9600bd connection
without needless retry's.

3 - The BER of 2.4E-3 resp 2.3E-3 for the receiver is, in my humble
opinion, completely and utterly useless. No real world 9600bd packet will
be usable with this transceiver.

Bit error rates of 1E-4 and worse (higher) should in my opinion at least get
some attention in the text, explaining that problems are to be expected and
for more details referring to the KE3Z article.

The FT-90R should be put in the "9600bd transmitter performance
disappointing" range of performance measurements. This radio is, in my
opinion, not '9600 capable'.

I hope you can correct this review in a future QST article. I think it
would be wise to give the non-capability for 9600 bd packet of these
transceiver (as was also the case with the IC706MKIIG) a little bit more
verbose attention, so people do not buy these boxes for this functionality.

Thanks,

Program receive sound samples with rate 11025 samples per second
(22050 bytes per second) and do a lot work for Digital
Signal Processing.

And it do a lot of drawing too.
